Deep Water by the Shore

*Artist Talk* : Saturday October 10th, 2-4 PM
TIAN Contemporain is pleased to present Deep Water by the shore, a second solo exhibition at the gallery by Canadian-American artist Robin Crofut-Brittingham. Following her recent solo exhibition at the Brattleboro Museum of Art in Vermont, this exhibition extends the artist’s ongoing investigation into the increasingly fraught relationship between human civilization and the natural world. In her latest body of work, the artist turns to the recurring mythology of the flood as both a visual and conceptual metaphor to imagine a world shaped by environmental collapse, defined not by its ending, but by what emerges in its aftermath. Combining monumental scale with meticulous details, Crofut-Brittingham constructs speculative landscapes in which familiar hierarchies between humanity and nature have begun to dissolve.
In this new series, the artist draws from mythology and folklore in which the natural world becomes an agent of transformation or rebirth. Stories of floods and fires that destroy one vision of the world so another can emerge are ubiquitous across cultures and religions. Fairy tales similarly position animals and plants as sites of moral reckoning and transformation. Crofut-Brittingham leans on the endurance of these stories and what they reveal about the human desire to understand, control, and find salvation within a natural world defined by cycles of growth, destruction, and regeneration.
Robin Crofut-Brittingham (b. 1989) received her BA from Bard College, New York, and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in California. Her recent exhibitions include Migrations at the Brattleboro Museum of Art (Vermont), Flock at the Berkshire Botanical Garden (Stockbridge), and After the Flood at Visions West Contemporary (Denver). Her work is held in the collections of the Royal Bank of Canada, the Fidelity Investments Art Collection, and various private collections. In fall 2026, she is present ing the solo exhibition Deep Water by the Shore at the gallery, followed by a solo presentation at Untitled Art, Miami Beach. Robin Crofut-Brittingham lives and works in Montreal.
