ANDRÉANNE ABBONDANZA-BERGERON

SORGENTE/SOURCE

16 SEP - 21 OCT, 2023

Z Art Space is proud to present SORGENTE/SOURCE, a solo exhibition of new photographic works by Canadian artist Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron. Following an independent artist residency in central Italy in Spring 2023, this series showcases the artist’s ongoing exploration with concepts of awe and the sublime through the lens of ruins, decay, and renewal.

First guided by the architecture of the area, Abbondanza-Bergeron’s research quickly culminates around the many water sources of the region, which in turn become the unexpected bliss in the artist’s unravelling of her ancestral roots and family history. The many encountered landscapes serve as a testament to the region’s scarred history of war and turmoil, yet the residual natural elements that remain today leave one with awe and silent contemplation. In Sanctuary Praetiritum series no 2 (2023), one is faced with an element of the sublime amid a landscape of rural and industrial ruins. Navigating between poetic contradictions of beauty and decay, the staggering and the quiet, Abbondanza-Bergeron finds her way back to her source – an antithesis of oasis and disarray, familiarity and breakaway.

Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron (b. 1984, Montreal) obtained her bachelors in Fine Arts at Concordia University in 2007 and her Masters in Sculpture and Installation in 2016. Her work tackles one’s relationship to their social and urban surroundings, often through means of site-specific installations, and tangible experiences occurring in the moment of encounter with the artwork. With a background in architectural studies, Abbondanza-Bergeron later turned to sculpture and performance, before settling into installation art, drawing, and photography, all of which have forged her unique approach to space, materials, and interactions with and within the artwork. She has previously shown at the FOFA gallery, the Maison de la culture Frontenac, and the Bina Ellen Art Gallery. Her new solo exhibition, Breakaways, opens at the Stewart Hall Art Gallery in September 2023. Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron currently lives and works in Montreal.
